PBIS

PBIS at Emerson School

Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) is a proactive systems approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. PBIS is a school-wide behavior management system designed to encourage essential social skills. The program teaches and reinforces positive behavior rather than punishing negative behavior.

Students receive positive praise throughout their school day to help reinforce all of the good things that they do at school. Teachers recognize those things by giving out Eagle Grams, SOAR slips and other positive incentives. Students get rewards for their good actions.

Majors and Minors

Emerson School now uses the SWIS system to collect data so that we can continue to improve. This system allows us to record student behavior data that we call 'major and minor' that may occur in the classroom, hallways, lunchroom, playground and bathrooms. Teachers fill our a 'minor' or 'major' form and give it to Mrs. Gregor to enter into the SWIS system. Students are aware when they receive a 'major' or 'minor'. Parents are notified of all 'majors' and of 'minors' at teacher's discretion.

The SWIS System is a reliable, confidential, web-based information system built to collect, summarize, and use student behavior data for decision making. Research demonstrates that educators can make more effective and efficient decisions when they have the right data in the right format at the right time.

Emerson is new to using this system to record student behavior data. We will be able to use the information to make decisions about school wide behavior. We can create reports that help us with school improvement.
