On May 23rd, at approximately 3:36 p.m., the Elmhurst Police Department responded to Churchville Middle School, located at 155 Victory Parkway for a reported suspicious person. Upon the arrival of police, officers learned a 12-year-old female reported that while outside of the school shortly after dismissal, a male/Hispanic, approximately 35-40 years old, with short dark hair and a mustache, driving a Black Toyota Sienna minivan asked her if she needed a ride. The Toyota Sienna was parked in the pick-up lane of the school. The subject started to exit the vehicle and the female immediately ran away from the area. The area was checked by police, but was not able to locate the vehicle.

A school surveillance video captured a picture the vehicle in front of one of the doors. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Elmhurst Police at 630-530-3050.

Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 is evolving in many ways as it seeks to prepare our students for a future we can only imagine. Future Ready is more than a catch phrase. It is a commitment to empowering and equipping our students with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need to be college, career and life ready.

Our District is working to deliver future focused curriculum and provide supportive learning environments for all students. In order to do that, we have embarked on a journey to address aging facilities and infuse our schools with the necessary tools to achieve that goal. The Focus 205 community engagement process, which began in 2015, was the first step. Master Facility Plan (MFP) work continues today; click here for more information and a meeting schedule.

Our community has long valued small class sizes and neighborhood schools. Elementary school class size targets are 25 in grades K-2 and 27 in grades 3-5. The current average class size in District 205 is 21.8. Occasional enrollment anomalies mean that class sizes are not consistent; some are below target and others are close to high end of the range. School capacity (percent of space that is being utilized) is another issue in District 205. Some of our buildings are overcrowded; others are operating at nearly full capacity, and some are underutilized. This poses instructional and staffing challenges that may increase as the community of Elmhurst continues to grow.

One potential component of the draft Master Facility Plan is boundary adjustments. The District realizes that any adjustments, even those that impact less than 5% of students, families, and/or houses, will be difficult. The options that have been presented to the Board of Education, and are being shared with the community, are preliminary. This is a work in progress and community feedback will be an important part of the process as we move forward.

Boundary adjustments can provide a long-term solution to overcrowding and student population “bubbles.” When schools are evenly sized and utilization is consistent, it is easier for the District to adhere to class size targets and maintain appropriate staff-to-student ratios. Consistencies like these help all students learn and grow.

D205 hired Cropper GIS in early 2018 to conduct a boundaries study. The primary goals were to increase space to accommodate All Day Kindergarten and balance class sizes across the District. The District asked the Cropper team to identify solutions that would affect the least number of families possible.

Two options (A and B) were presented to the Board on April 10. Both addressed ADK and balancing class sizes.  They also provided potential options for housing students during construction at Lincoln and Field Schools, two of our oldest buildings at 103 and 87 years old, respectively.

In response to feedback from the Board of Education and parents, the administration asked Cropper to see if there were alternative solutions that could meet the criteria and better preserve natural barriers such as train tracks and major roads. Two additional options (C and D) were developed and presented to the Board on May 8. Option D impacts the fewest students (3.6%), does not require busing students who currently walk, preserves natural barriers and does not send any students away from new construction, but also does not preserve contiguous boundaries.

Developing these additional options emphasizes the importance of community feedback. The plans remain a work in progress. No decisions have been made, nor will any changes be made in the immediate future. The Board will consider how it wants to move forward with the boundary discussion at its May 22 meeting. Options A, C and D are linked below.

Boundary adjustments would only be considered in a Master Facilities Plan that includes All Day Kindergarten. The District is committed to ensuring that current students will not be impacted by boundary adjustments and will be developing “grandfathering” provisions to minimize the impact on siblings and families. As with the entire process, we will be seeking community input on this portion of the plan as well. Our goal is to minimize the impact on individual families and achieve the goals outlined above.

Four community meetings have been scheduled. Draft plans, budgets, and potential boundary adjustments will be presented. The presentations will be followed by small group discussions. All attendees will have the opportunity to provide additional feedback via an electronic exit survey. Meeting dates:

  • Wednesday, May 30, 2018, 7 pm @, Sandburg Middle School

At Tuesday’s meeting, the Board of Education heard an update from the All Day Kindergarten Committee. In the state of Illinois, 79% of 859 districts are offering all-day programs, as of 2015.

“All Day Kindergarten educates the whole child in a developmentally appropriate manner,” said Lincoln Principal Jen Barnabee. “It enhances the legacy of Elmhurst by supporting students to reach their full potential. Children in full day classes excel in reading, number knowledge, writing and self-regulation versus their half-day peers. A full day program provides us the time to make the learning experience for our youngest students even better. They deserve the same robust, inter-disciplinary as the rest of our students receive.”

District 205 is working to develop the next phase of its comprehensive facilities study and is creating a Master Facility Plan that will serve our community for many years to come. There are two community-wide Future Focused meetings remaining on the following dates and at these locations:

The City of Elmhurst’s Commission on Youth honored young volunteers at its annual Exemplary Youth Service Awards program held Wednesday, April 18, at Sandburg Middle School in front of a packed house. Ken Bartels served as Master of Ceremonies. District 205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer and Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley welcomed the honorees and their families.

The Exemplary Youth Service Awards program recognizes individuals who have demonstrated at least one of the following criteria through volunteer service: the level of involvement should demonstrate an exemplary commitment; the service must contribute to the health and well–being of a worthy individual or group or the community at large; the service should help promote the spirit of volunteerism.

The 83 honorees ranged in age from elementary through high school. Nine groups and 18 individuals were nominated for this year’s awards. Serving as distinguished judges were Elmhurst Police Deputy Chief Michael McLean, Deputy Fire Chief Bill Anaszewiczand Alderman Marti Deuter.Speakers for the evening included Exemplary Youth Service Award recipients from Kartwheels for Kids, a group of five York High School students who have been volunteering and fundraising together since they were fifth graders.

Other Exemplary Youth Service Award recipients included an elementary group known as the Sweet Treats and the following individuals: from Churchville Middle School – Jackie Cimino and Cayliann Gillie and from York High School – Sean Hayes, Dani Kolosiekeand Samantha Uditsky.

The program will air on Uverse Channel 99 and Comcast Channel 6 next month and will also be available for viewing at www.ElmhurstTV.com. The program is linked below.

On Tuesday, April 24, at the D205 Board of Education meeting, there will be a presentation by architects Wight & Company, which will highlight various facility options, overlaid with findings from Focus 205. The meeting begins at 7:30 PM at the District 205 Administrative Center, 162 S. York. All community members are welcomed to attend. At Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, the Board heard from three teachers and an instructional coach about how the infusion of technology via the District’s Mobile Learning Implementation has dramatically changed student engagement in their classrooms. They also provided teacher feedback samples on the topics of creativity, student-to-device ratios and device types.

A video created by the Communications Office demonstrated these new and exciting modes of learning and teaching. Assistant Superintendent of Innovation & Growth Dr. Mark Cohen noted that “these skills fit our concept of being future ready and future focused, allowing for collaboration in the digital space beyond the walls of the classroom.”

The tradition continues with this year’s seventh Top Pizza Taste of Elmhurst event on Thursday, April 26, from 5:30-8:00 PM in the York High Campbell (Green & White) Gym. Local area restaurants and pizzerias will showcase their traditional and specialty variety pizza pies. The $10 entrance fee allows attendees to taste the variety of vendor offerings and vote for their favorites in a variety of categories. Past winners participating this year include Bacci, DiLeo, Fratello, Gulliver, Lou Malnati, Mama Maria and Roberto's. Newcomers include Aurelio's and Rosati's.

This is a great community fundraising event that allows families and friends to enjoy dinner and taste pizzas that are both familiar and new. For those families trying to juggle the Celebration of Learning night, it’s a great way to grab dinner before or after. Please note that the time has been extended to 8 PM so that you can continue the celebration.

Good Afternoon -

As most of you know, there was an increased police presence at York High School today, March 22, to ensure the safety of our students and staff in light of what the police have called "a suspicious threat" which they received. Classes at York proceeded smoothly today, and there were no incidents of any kind. There have been no reports that suggest a reason to be concerned at any of our other schools. I have been in contact with the Chief of Police throughout the day as we have been monitoring the situation.

School will be in session tomorrow, March 23, and it will be treated as a normal school day. There will continue to be a heightened police presence at York and additional security measures will be in place. Please be advised that all York students should be prepared to show their IDs when they enter the building tomorrow.

I would like to thank all of you who have expressed concern and support in this difficult time. Rest assured that if we believed students and staff were in imminent danger, we would not be holding school tomorrow. Whether or not you decide to keep your child(ren) home from school on Friday - or any other day - is a family decision.

The 22nd annual Elmhurst Student Chess Tournament was held at York High School on March 7, 2018. This year’s contest attracted 262 pre-registered players and meant another record turnout, with 242 sign-ins to compete.

Again this year, members of the York Chess Team assisted on the tournament floor. Organizers Chris and Debbie Khayat thank all of the parent volunteers, the judges (who do not have students in our community), food support team, technical support team, teachers and parents who supported these school clubs with their time.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Summer Music Program offers an exciting opportunity for all current 4th - 8th grade band and orchestra students and all current 6th - 8th grade choir students to continue practicing in an ensemble during the summer. Consistent, regular practice during the summer helps students to retain and reinforce concepts and skills that they have learned during the school year and helps them continue to learn and grow as young musicians.

  • Summer Band and Orchestra for current elementary students will run June 4 through June 29 at Sandburg Middle School. Rehearsals will be held Monday through Friday mornings. Each rehearsal is one hour. The final performances will be on Friday morning, June 29 at Sandburg Middle School.
  • Summer Band, Orchestra, and Choir for current middle school students will run June 4 – July 6 at York High School from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Band and Orchestra rehearsals will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Choir rehearsals will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings. There will be no rehearsals on July 3rd and 4th. The final performance will be on Friday, July 6 at York High School.
  • The registration fee for all levels is $92.00. The fee includes a Summer Music Program T shirt.
  • Middle School Summer Band and Orchestra students may also participate in Jazz Band at no additional cost.
  • Middle school students who register for summer band or orchestra may also enroll in choir at no additional cost.

The Dist. 205 Summer Music Program welcomes students who will be on vacation for some rehearsals and/or participate in other summer activities. Students who can only attend part of the summer program are still strongly encouraged to register and attend as often as they can! Students who practice during the summer are much more likely to experience continued success in band, orchestra, and choir. We strongly encourage your child to participate as much as they are able!

Members of the District 205 Community Advisory Team (CAT) have been chosen and notified. With more than 125 applicants for a 30-member committee, the selection process was extremely difficult. We are grateful that so many residents are willing to help D205 in this important work!

A rubric was used to make sure that every school was represented, along with as many stakeholder groups as possible. The number of members was expanded from 25 to 33. We will be seeking to engage the remaining 93 applicants in other meaningful ways as the journey continues.

CAT members will be asked to:

  • Ensure that messages and materials related to the MFP are clear and easy-to-understand
  • Help anticipate and provide representative community questions and concerns
  • Offer suggestions to make sure the District is using every opportunity to reach stakeholders

While the CAT will assist the D205 administration with crafting clear communications for the community, it will not make decisions regarding the draft plan, as all community feedback will carry equal value and weight. The District plans to offer many opportunities for parents, staff and the community to weigh in on the Master Facility Plan.

The first CAT planning meeting will be on Monday, March 19. Please note that this is not a public meeting.

What is a PLC? In District 205, PLCs play an important role in promoting student growth and building the capacity of our teachers. But what is a PLC and what is its function?

PLC stands for Professional Learning Community. PLCs are designed to ensure high levels of teacher collaboration focused on student learning. They can take many forms. Examples include ensuring that teachers of the same grade level or subject area, as well as instructional coaches, special education teachers and support staff, have time to analyze assessment data, share best practices for success, and plan for future learning.

PLC groups meeting during student late arrival days, institute days and also during the school day at various times throughout the week.

The next all-district Student Late Arrival Day will be this Wednesday, February 28. Certified staff and administrators will be using this time to collaboratively review student data, discuss professional growth topics, problem solve, share best practices and continue the work of building a Professional Learning Community. In addition, Friday, March 2 will be a Teacher Institute Day with no school for students.

 

The Student Late Arrival instructional schedule for 2017-18 will be as follows:

PM Early Childhood – 12:55 PM to 3:00 PM

Happy Friday!

It was a short but great week at Emerson!  The second trimester ended on Thursday… I can’t believe the year is two-thirds over! Report cards will be coming home on March 9th. It is hard to believe but we are already planning for the 18-19 school year. As we plan for next year, I wanted to ensure that you know the targets the district uses for class size and staffing. In kinder, first and second grade our target numbers are twenty-five students per class. In third, fourth and fifth grade they are twenty-seven students per class. Keep in mind that these are targets, not caps.  The current average class size in third grade across the district is 22.7. At this point, we are projected to keep around the same class sizes that we have had this year. As we register new students and have students move out, we closely monitor numbers and work with district to ensure we are properly staffed!

 

 Back to this year…as I visited classrooms this week many of the grade levels are taking a break from reading non-fiction and revisiting the strategies we use as we read fiction text.  I saw a lot of third graders identifying figurative language in fiction text this week! On Wednesday we had our future focused learning buddies lesson that focused on optimism. The students discussed with their buddies how they can look at the bright side of a situation! Our week is wrapping up with an exciting event… I am so excited to see our talented Eagles at Emerson’s Got Talent tonight at 6:30!

Happy Friday!
Wow, this week flew by! It has been wonderful visiting classrooms this week seeing so much great learning going on. Second grade started their surgery days to reinforce their Body Systems unit… what a fun way to practice what we learned! Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms enjoyed Valentine's Day parties. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who made those parties so great for the students. This morning we had a PBIS celebration assembly because the students filled the bucket so they earned a snowball fight (not real snow)! You could tell they really wanted this one because it only took them six weeks to fill the bucket. Rizzo asked that we learn a new dance called “The Rizzo," we had tons of fun trying out the new dance. We also reinforced the importance of treating one another with respect and using the strategy SWAT (Stop, Walk and Talk) if one is not being treated respectfully. We told the students it is important if someone is not treating them respectfully, tell them to please stop; if they don’t, walk away and tell an adult. We also reminded the students if they are being asked to stop, they need to stop what they are doing, take a breath, and leave the situation. Thank you for helping us to reinforce these important skills.

Please know that Elmhurst District 205 will only contact parents and staff when schools are closed or there is a late start called. In general (excluding other emergency situations), if there is NO announcement by 5:45 AM via the following methods, schools are open: phone, email and SMS text message (if you’ve signed up for this feature) in both English and Spanish; the District 205 website (when in doubt, check it out); the District 205 Facebook page - www.facebook.com/ElmhurstD205; the D205 Twitter account - www.twitter.com/ElmhurstD205. If your phone number has recently changed, please contact your child(ren)’s school so that they can update that information in PowerSchool.

Additionally, you may visit the Emergency Closing Center website - www.emergencyclosings.com (District 205 schools are listed alphabetically as DIST #205 (ELMHURST PUBLIC SCHOOLS).

We suggest downloading the Know Before You Go flyer and keeping it handy in paper form, especially during the winter months. If power is out, you may not be able to access the Emergency Closings page of the District 205 website.

In general, District 205 will not close school on a forecast, i.e., the inclement weather must be real and present. In cases where the area is hit hard by snow, it might be possible to make a call in advance (usually in the evening of the day before). Most of the time, that decision must be made early in the morning, based on conditions that have presented themselves overnight.

Temperature is only one factor. Wind chill is also taken into account. Generally, when “real feel” temperatures are -30 degrees or colder, school will be cancelled for the sake of students who ride the bus or walk to school, as frost bite can occur quickly under such extreme conditions.


When District 205 determines that weather conditions or an emergency situation warrant an Emergency Late Start Schedule, families will be notified in the same manner they would be notified in the event of a school closing. Each family will receive a phone, email or text notice (if you've opted in) from our rapid notification system. More information about the Emergency Late Start Schedule is available online.

On Emergency Late Start days, parents and staff are encouraged to monitor the District’s website for updates on the status of after-school activities. Information about York athletics would be posted on the York School webpage in the afternoon.

If an Emergency Late Start schedule is activated:

  • Classes will begin using the standard Student Late Arrival schedule
  • Buses will operate using the standard Student Late Arrival pick-up and drop-off times.
  • Parent should use the standard Student Late Arrival schedule for drop-off - 20 minutes prior to the start times below.

AM Kindergarten and AM Early Childhood Classes - 9:45 AM to 11:55 AM

Out-of-District Programs

If out-of-district programs are in session, transportation will proceed as normal.\


Before/After School RecStation

The AM RecStation program will not be offered on late start days. The PM (after-school) RecStation hours will remain as scheduled on late start days.


Before School Programs

All before-school programs, including but not limited to, orchestra, band, choir, clubs, athletic practices or student activities will be cancelled on late start days.


Field Trips

Any field trip scheduled on the day of a late start will be cancelled as would be the procedure on days when school is cancelled for emergency reasons.


Technology Center of DuPage (TCD)

Due to the modified schedule, only PM TCD students will attend TCD.

The 22nd annual Elmhurst Student Chess Tournament will be held on Wednesday, March 7th, beginning at 6:00 PM in the York High School Commons, 355 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst. Students will compete in the following six categories: 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6-8th grade and high school. Last year, over 250 students participated in the tournament.

All students who attend school in Elmhurst – public or private – are welcome to participate with the completion and submission of a signed permission slip and tournament fee of $3.00. All participants will receive a certificate; the top four in each category receive ribbons; and the tournament champions receive a trophy.

The annual Student Chess Tournament is organized by parent volunteers, many of whom coach chess clubs at their children’s schools. Contestants will compete within the rules, playing five timed matches each. Volunteer judging is performed by independent chess experts who are brought in for this event. Snacks and drinks will be donated and provided. Pizza will be sold during the tournament.

The registration deadline is Thursday, March 1st. Interested families may contact their child’s school chess club leader for the permission slip and rules. Questions may be directed to Chris Khayat at 630-290-1504 (cell) or khayats@yahoo.com

Parents of fifth grade students receiving special education services are invited to attend one of two meetings to answer any questions you may have as your child moves to middle school. The purpose of this meeting is to provide parents details on how special education services are implemented in the middle school setting. Answers to commonly asked questions about a "day in the life of a middle school student" will also be discussed. 

Each meeting will present the same information. The first meeting was held on February 8. The second meeting will be held on Monday, February 12, from 6-7 PM at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St.

Enrollment for 2018-19 incoming kindergartners and first grade students new to Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 will take place on Tuesday, February 6, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM and on Wednesday, February 7, from 12:30 to 3:00 PM at the school of attendance serving their home address. On Thursday, February 8, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, enrollment will only be offered at Conrad Fischer School (for Fischer students) and at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York (serving all District 205 elementary schools).

If you are enrolling your child in Kindergarten, please consider participating in our Dual Language program for 2018-19, which will be located at Conrad Fischer School. For more information, contact District 205 English Language Coordinator Ariana Leonard at aleonard@elmhurst205.org.

Students must be five years old on or before September 1, 2018, to be enrolled in kindergarten. (The student’s original birth certificate must be submitted as proof.) During the February enrollment, parents/guardians must present three proofs of residency. Additionally, a photo I.D. of the person enrolling the student must be produced for identification purposes.

Happy Friday!

It’s freezing outside but we are still heating it up at Emerson! This week the students in third through fifth grade were working hard to finish up their MAP tests. They really showed that fire as they took their time, carefully read all the answer choices, and worked out the problems. The results will be sent out to you from the district in a few weeks! As I visited classrooms this week, I saw students across many grade levels using the skills they are learning in reading and writing to conduct research, take notes, and write about topics they are interested in. It is awesome to see how excited the students are about their learning!

An important reminder about Valentine’s Day… if you send valentines with your students to share, please DO NOT send valentines with candy. We cannot give out and/or share candy. If you send valentines with candy, we will have to send the candy back home with your child. If your child would like to share something with their classmates, consider sending stickers, pencils, erasers, etc. Thank you for helping to keep all of our students safe!


Notes and Reminders:

  • Next week begins Kindergarten and new to Emerson First Grade Registration! Registration at Emerson will take place Tuesday, February 6th from 9-11am and Wednesday, February 7th from 12:30-3:00pm.  Evening registration will be at the District Office on Thursday, February 8th from 4:00-7:00pm.

During this event, students will rotate through "stations" to participate in engaging reading and MakerSpace activities (e.g., write a secret code, build a boat, program a robot mouse). We are looking for parent volunteers who would like to help. Interested? Please respond using this form. We will follow-up to confirm assignments by early March. Thank you!

Be sure to support the Pot Belly Eat & Earn that same night from 5 to 8 PM at the St. Charles Road location. No flier or coupons are needed. Happy Friday!

 

Did you know it is the 100th day of school? The kindergarteners and first graders had tons of fun today doing 100 minutes worth of hundreds activities! Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped make that happen! We had a great week at Emerson! The teachers began the week in an Institute Day where we discussed matching readers to text and choosing appropriate books in order to best meet the needs of all our students. We also did grade level articulation to plan cohesive math instruction as the students move from grade level to grade level.

On Tuesday, we were so happy to have the students back! Many classes did their MAP tests in reading and math this week. The testing will continue next week so all students will finish up. On Wednesday, we met with our learning buddies to talk about how to have a flexible, open-mindset. Check out some examples of what the students created with their buddies on the Emerson website! On Thursday, Molly, Quinn and I were able to join the second grade families for PTA Rec Night! What a fun event! Thank you very much to PTA and the parent volunteers for providing such a great experience for the students and their families!

Parenting to Promote a Growth Mindset - March 8th, 2018: Time 6:30 -8:30pm at Sandburg Auditorium- Doors 3 and 7 will be open.

This parent presentation will center on exploring the current research related to Carol Dweck's concept of Mindset. Mindset is defined as a set of beliefs or a way of thinking that determines ones’ behavior, outlook, and mental attitude.  Within this frame of reference, parents will identify practices that fall into either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset category. This workshop will provide specific focus on ways parents can develop a Growth Mindset with their children in order to develop problem-solving skills and persistence even in the face of obstacles.  

 

The Twenty-first Century Teenage Brain - April 12, 2018 Time 6:30 -8:30pm Sandburg Auditorium- Doors 3 and 7 will be open. 

This parent presentation will center on brain development and personality characteristics commonly associated with adolescent development. Anchored in recent research in neuroscience, the focus for this parent presentation is twofold: 

1. What does the current research tell us about the unique aspects of the teen brain?  

2. How can we use these understanding to inform our parenting approaches?

Happy Friday! What a great week we had at Emerson! The students were working hard academically, having family fun at PTA Rec Nights and our musically talented 4th and 5th graders had their band and orchestra concerts this week! Also, the Emerson Singers did an amazing job representing our school when they sang the Star Spangled Banner at the Elmhurst College Basketball game on Wednesday night. Thank you to the PTA, Mr. Miller, Mrs. Krause and Ms. Pagones for these great experiences! We also had an outstanding assembly sponsored by the PTA, Handicap This!  The students heard first hand examples of inclusion and tolerance from the presenters.  Thank you PTA!!!

 

We are beginning our Winter MAP testing window for 2nd through 5th graders.  They will take the computer based Measures of Academic Progress Test in both literacy and math within the next two weeks. The ACCESS testing window has also begun.  This is a test of English Proficiency only for students who qualify for English Language Learner support.  This assessment measures the student’s levels of English proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. We look forward to seeing the great growth the students have made this year!

 

Notes and Reminders:

-Parking Lot!! A few arrival and dismissal reminders… please be sure you a driving carefully and staying in the lanes in the Mary Queen parking lot.  Please be especially aware on days with inclement weather, there seem to be extra issues on those days. Also, you must use the Mary Queen parking lot for all drop-offs and pick-ups during arrival and dismissal time. The parking lot is only to be used for pick-ups during the school day if your child is ill!

District 205 Foundation's 2018 Thiems Grant Application deadline is fast approaching. The application has been streamlined to make it less labor intensive to apply. District 205 teachers, students, administrators, parents or community members are eligible to apply. Requested programs, projects, or instructional resources should enhance the educational experience of students, be clearly in support of and help to deliver relevant curriculum, and, ideally, demonstrate creativity/innovation.

Applications are due on Monday, February 12. Applicants requesting technology (including hardware, software, digital subscriptions, and audio/visual equipment) should review the Multimedia Recommendations and Computer Tech Options forms prior to drafting their proposals and must include the submission of a completed Thiems Grant Technology Review Form. With one member absent, the D205 Board of Education voted 6-0 to approve a Dual Language program at Conrad Fischer Elementary School for the 2018-19 school year. There was extensive discussion on the Dual Language program before the final vote. Jane Bailey, Principal at Conrad Fischer Elementary, discussed the issue of space. She said they are planning for five kindergarten sections for next year; the school currently has four sections. Mrs. Bailey said many rooms at the school are allocated for “resource rooms,” which is nothing more than office space. If those rooms were allocated to kindergarten classes, resource personnel who previously used those rooms could partner with a classroom teacher and co-teach and/or provide acceleration.

"No implementation is without growing pains, and this will be the growing pain, but I do think it will be worth it at the end of the day,” Mrs. Bailey said.

According to Principal Bailey, it is difficult to plan for potential space concerns further down the road than the first year of the program because it is still unknown how many students will participate. If there are too many Dual Language students to fit into Fischer, plans can be made to add a second location.

Regarding impact to the Fischer community, Dr. Henderson said the District will look to collect feedback from parents, students and teachers in a similar fashion to the way feedback is currently being collected for the Standards-Based Reporting system.

“It’s not something to be fearful of, because we have to think differently,” Ms. Bailey said. “If you're talking about opportunities in a global economy, then you need to be bilingual."

Dr. Moyer added that “There are benefits for both the native English speaking and native Spanish speaking students in this program, even though the rationale focuses more on native Spanish speaking students. It’s a phenomenal enrichment opportunity to truly allow all students to graduate bi-lingual, bi-literate and bi-cultural.”

Jill's award will be presented as part of the festivities at the Foundation Gala -Empowering Futures to be held on February 10 at The Hyatt Lodge, Oak Brook.

Congratulations to Jacquelyn Discipio, Principal of Bryan Middle School, for being selected as the 2017-2018 Middle School Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principals Association DuPage Region. Ms. Discipio was selected from a pool of nominees from throughout the DuPage County region. She was honored by the District 205 Board of Education at its January 9 meeting.

She was nominated by Elmhurst District 205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer, who stated in his nomination that “Ms. Discipio has been asked to lead monumental and transformative change in a short period of time, examples of
which include: a successful one-to-one personalized learning implementation utilizing Chromebooks in year one; implementation of a new English Language Arts curriculum and the addition of instructional coaches in year two; ongoing development of common assessments in all grade levels and content areas; and a major overhaul of the schedule to include dedicated time for interventions and enrichment and increased co-teaching for the 2017-18 school year.”

Ms. Discipio will be honored at the DuPage IPA’s annual Spring Student Recognition Breakfast on April 23. She will now be considered for a State award from among 20 nominees representing the other regions of the Illinois Principals Association. The state winners will be announced in the spring.

We had a great first week back at Emerson!  The students jumped right back into learning and were working hard all week. On Monday, some of our 5th grade students did an awesome job reteaching the rest of the students our PBIS expectations of respectful, responsible and engaged behavior across the day!  This week we also received new touchscreen chromebooks for our kindergarten and second grade classrooms because our school was chosen for a primary grade technology pilot!  The teachers are very excited to use this new technology!  On Wednesday, the students met with their future focused learning buddies and learned about adaptability and flexible thinking. The students had such good discussions with their buddies about how to be flexible thinkers and go with the flow!  We all demonstrated flexibility this week with our plumbing troubles… but good news, as of this afternoon the issue has been resolved!

Happy Friday!

We had a great end to 2017 this week! On Wednesday the students worked with their Future Focused Learning Buddies to learn about compassion.  The students read a story, had a discussion, then worked on their chromebooks to create a google drawing that showed their thoughts about compassion. Every time we meet with our buddies, I continue to be impressed by the quality of conversations the older students are able to facilitate with their younger buddies.  What great role models we have at Emerson!

 

On Wednesday we also had our second PBIS celebration assembly!  Rizzo the Eagle joined us in recognizing some groups of students who have shown their fire recently as well as helping us announce to the students that they earned their second all school celebration of the year… a teacher switch!  For thirty minutes today all the teachers switched spots. Ms. Herman definitely enjoyed her time as principal during the teacher switch while I had fun in second grade! In addition to teacher switch fun, we headed into the holidays with a wonderful Holiday Sing led by Mr. Miller and classroom parties. Thank you to all of our party planners and volunteers for making a great event for the students!

Happy Friday!

It was a fun and busy week at Emerson! We had a wonderful performance from the Churchville Orchestra and Band on Tuesday!  It is so neat for the teachers and students to see former Emerson students showing off their talents.  Visiting the classrooms this week, I saw a lot of great informational writing.  The students are doing a really nice job researching and recording important information that they will use to inform their writing.  I have seen them using what they learned about text features to gather information as they research.  It is awesome to see the reading and writing connection!  I can’t believe there is only one more week until Winter Break! We are also really looking forward to our winter parties next Friday afternoon!

Enrollment for 2018-19 incoming kindergarteners and first grade students new to Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 will take place on Tuesday, February 6, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM and on Wednesday, February 7, from 12:30 to 3:00 PM at the school of attendance serving their home address. On Thursday, February 8, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, enrollment will only be offered at Conrad Fischer School (for Fischer students) and at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York (serving all District 205 elementary schools).

Students must be five years old on or before September 1, 2018, to be enrolled in kindergarten. (The student’s original birth certificate must be submitted as proof.) During the February enrollment, parents/guardians must present three proofs of residency. Additionally, a photo I.D. of the person enrolling the student must be produced for identification purposes.

Happy Friday!


We had a fun and busy week at Emerson! As I visited classrooms this week I saw students using text features to read and comprehend a variety of non-fiction text.  The students are able to tell me how each of the text features help them as readers!  I have also seen students across all grade levels representing their thinking as they solve math problems using a variety of strategies whether it’s multi-digit subtraction problems or long division in the upper grades!  What great thinkers we have here at Emerson! We also had a wonderful professional learning for the teachers on Wednesday morning.  Members of our leadership team shared lessons and resources for incorporating high level thinking, student choice, and student self-assessment into their lessons. We are so lucky to have such outstanding teachers here at Emerson!

 

Our PBIS team met on Thursday morning, here is an update from them:

The students tried and almost filled the B and E during our last Be Sticker Day which focused on Responsibility!  We are still working to fill the B and E with 85% of students keeping their stickers and showing responsible behavior all day long! During the month of October, the student’s Soar Slips were put on display.  There were a lot!! We are also getting close to earning another celebration with all the Soar Slips the students have earned! When students earn Soar Slips, they also earn a ticket to vote for the celebration of their choice. This time the choices are 30-minute teacher switch, all school freeze dance and deck the halls! Lastly, our Future Focused Learning Buddies are going great. Twice a month the buddies get together and learn future focused skills, the past couple lessons have been mindfulness, contemplation, and compassion. Please encourage all your students to follow the school wide expectations of being respectful, responsible and engaged!

Happy Friday!

I cannot believe it is December already! Time flies when you are having fun! We had a great week here at Emerson. Thank you all for your flexibility and communication on Monday morning as we worked to keep the students safe with an emergency late arrival! Tuesday we had Be Sticker Day and the students were working to show responsible behavior! Wednesday we had Future Focused Learning Buddies and the students learned about mindfulness and how to keep calm.  The students worked with their buddies to brainstorm strategies they can use to keep a calm mind when there are many distractions! Today is Twin Day!  It is fun to see the teachers and students dressed to match in their cute twin, triplet, and even quadruplet outfits! Next week begins our mid-year round of Fountas and Pinnell reading record benchmark assessments. We are so excited about the great learning the students have done so far this year!

 

Notes and Reminders:

-Text Message Alert: The District 205 Communications Office is working to ensure our text alert system is working effectively. They have just updated the system so the second cell phone number listed in your Power School account will now also receive a text alert. They are working to find an efficient way to update the system if you didn’t receive an alert at all… stay tuned for more details on that next week! The Communications Office wanted me to pass along a thank you to our Emerson families for their positive response to the difficult situation on Monday morning!

 

-5 Essentials Survey:  We have received the new release date for the 5 Essentials Survey, the survey window will open on December 5th. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey when you receive the link. We use the results to drive our school improvement planning. The results also go into our school rating and on our school report card! Thank you!

 

-Students and Technology:  I have had students in the older grades this past week telling me about their cell phone use after school hours and their group text chats. I know this phone use is occurring after school but I just wanted to send a reminder to you, please monitor your student’s cell phone use. The communication abilities and the student’s ability with technology today is very advanced and I would like to be proactive in ensuring student safety and positive appropriate use! Thank you for your partnership in this!

 

-Late Arrival: A reminder that next Wednesday, December 6th is a Late Arrival for the students.

 

This weekend we had one of my favorite ways to kick off the holidays…every year my family attends a holiday band concert that my in-laws play in.  The concert ends with the arrival of Santa. Seeing the excitement on my daughters’ faces makes me smile and reminds me about the anticipation in the air at this time of year! I hope everyone had moments that made them smile this weekend!

The District 205 Foundation's 2018 Thiems Grant Application is now available. In consideration of the demands on your time, the application has been streamlined to make it less labor intensive to apply. We encourage you to get creative, innovate and collaborate, and apply for programs or enhancements that will help you deliver curriculum and engage students. Applications that contain technology or media components must include a Technology Review form.

District 205 teachers, students, administrators, parents or community members are eligible to apply. Requested programs, projects, or instructional resources should enhance the educational experience of students, be clearly in support of and help to deliver relevant curriculum, and, ideally, demonstrate creativity/innovation.

Applications will be accepted beginning Friday, December 1, and are due on Monday, February 12, 2018. Please review the Thiems Grant Application Guidelines and contact Executive Director Lisa Fanelli at ext. 2770 or lfanelli@elmhurst205.org with questions.

Since 1990, educational grants totaling nearly $1.5 million have been awarded through the Thiems Grant Program.

Elmhurst Police have three suspects in custody for investigation of burglary and auto theft that occurred in north Elmhurst. On Monday, November 27, 2017 at 5:00 AM, Elmhurst police officers responded to the area of 600 Fay for a report of a prowler in the garage. Responding officers observed two vehicles leaving the area and attempted to stop the cars. Both vehicles fled and struck a marked squad car in front of 429 West Ave., and the suspects fled the scene on foot. It has been learned that the vehicles were stolen from Villa Park & Elmhurst.

Elmhurst Police officers established a perimeter and with the assistance of surrounding police agencies began a systematic search of the area. The suspects were subsequently located at: 463 W. North Ave, North Ave & Ridgeland, and 400 block of West Ave. Police have recovered a loaded handgun from one of the suspects and are still looking for a fourth suspect who is believed to have left the area.

As a result, both Emerson Elementary and Churchville Middle School were operating under an emergency Late Start schedule this morning.

This investigation remains ongoing and at this point, it is believed that the suspects may have been entering unlocked cars and garages in order to steal items of value and cars with keys in the ignition.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Elmhurst Police at 630-530-3050.

Students, teachers and parents across Illinois have the opportunity to participate in the fourth annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey allows you and your child (in grades 4 through 12) to share thoughts on important elements of school effectiveness at your child’s school. It asks students about their experiences in school and parents about their experiences with their child’s school, giving school leaders critical input to help develop school improvement plans.

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:

  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environments
  • Ambitious Instruction

Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.

In March of 2018, reports will be sent to schools and districts that achieve the 20% participation threshold for parents and 50% threshold for students and staff. Data will also be included in the Illinois State School Report Card next fall.


Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. Student participants will be required to log in using their student ID and birth date in order to complete the survey. Students’ identities will be completely confidential. Teachers or administrators will never see individual responses to survey questions and will only receive aggregated information, such as the total percentage of students who agree homework assignments help them learn the course material.

The parent survey takes about 10 minutes; the student survey takes about 25 minutes. Happy Friday!

I wanted to take a minute to express my gratitude as I have much to be thankful for during this Thanksgiving season!  I am so grateful for the warm welcome I have received this year from you and your children.  Emerson already feels like home because of the wonderful community we have.  As I visit the classrooms every day I am so proud of the hard work of all the teachers and the students as they show the world they have that fire!  The students at Emerson make me smile every day with their kind words, smiling faces and great thinking!  Thank you for sharing your children with us every day, they are a joy!

 

The students are working hard as we are off to a great start in the second trimester!  Ms. Kawa and the Girls on the Run Club along with their special guest runners did an awesome job at their 5K on Wednesday afternoon.  It was so fun to see the pride on the student’s faces when they accomplished their goal! We also met with our Future Focused Learning Buddies this week and learned about contemplation and mindfulness.  The students discuss what it means to be aware and thoughtful of their actions throughout the day! We are looking forward to see you next week at Parent Teacher Conferences!

Happy Friday Eagles!

We had a fun and busy first week of the second trimester!  Many of our grades are finishing up their first of three literacy units which was focusing on fiction and are about ready to head into their second unit which will focus on comprehending various forms of non-fiction text. On Monday we learned the winning name of our Eagle mascot… Rizzo the Eagle!  It was a landslide winner with over one-third of the students in the school voting for that name!  Thursday was “Be Responsible” Sticker Day.  On Be Sticker Days the students try to make it through the whole day keeping their sticker on. If they are not displaying expected behavior, they lose their sticker.  Hopefully your student made it home with their sticker yesterday! Also, a big thank you to everyone who participated in the food drive this week and to all those students who wrote letters to Veterans to honor them today! Thank you for making a difference!

 

Next week on Wednesday the 5 Essentials Survey window opens up.  This survey is required by the state of Illinois as a tool for school improvement.  Parents, teachers and students (4th grade and older) take the survey and rate their school in five areas: effective leaders, collaborative teachers, involved families, supportive environment and ambitious instruction. The scores of this survey will go into our state report card that comes out next fall and plays a part in school ratings. Please take a few minutes to take this important survey when the link is sent out so we can showcase the great things going on at Emerson!

Parent-Teacher Conferences at the elementary schools will take place on Monday, November 20 from 4:30 to 8:00 PM and on Tuesday, November 21 from 10 AM to 6 PM with no school for elementary school students that day. Sign up will be held via Power PTC and begins this Tuesday, November 7 at 6 AM and closes on November 14 at midnight.

 

A PowerSchool parent single sign-on (SSO) account is required to access the PowerPTC web portal for conference sign-up. Parents who have not yet created an SSO account have received a separate communication with instructions. Contact your school's main office for questions or assistance with creating an SSO account. Step-by-step instructions for conference sign-up can be found on www.elmhurst205.org/PTC.

Happy Friday Eagles! What an awesome week we had at Emerson! Monday was our author visit with David Bierdzycki… he was amazing! He had such a fun and engaging way of presenting as he taught the students how he takes an idea and turns it into a published book. It was very neat to see how his ideas and drawings change as he creates a story.  We even got a sneak peek at his next book, Sumo Kitty! We learned that the main character in his new book was inspired by his very own cat! We are so grateful to Mrs. Blanford and PTA for making the event possible!

 

Tuesday was our student council sponsored Glow Lunch!  That was such a neat idea and a great way to celebrate lunch on Halloween! Many students participated in Art Discovery on Wednesday where they learned about Frida Kahlo, a Hispanic painter who mostly painted self-portraits. Thank you again PTA! I also owe a third thank you to PTA for a great Fall Fest last Friday night! Molly, Quinn and I had a great time, it was wonderful to see so many families there and there were some outstanding costumes that our students had!  I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, don’t forget to set your clocks back and enjoy the extra hour of sleep!

We have convened a dual language committee comprised of a variety of stakeholders to explore details and possible future programming. The goal of dual language programs is for students to become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural. We look forward to providing this opportunity for Elmhurst students! -Community Coat Drive: This Thanksgiving season, Peggy Noldan and Bonni Falco, two real estate brokers with L.W. Reedy of Elmhurst, are hosting a coat drive at the Emerson Rec Station. Peggy and Bonni have been directors of this program for 10 years. To help warm the hearts and bodies of children and families, they ask you to donate new or gently used coats or jackets in youth, teen and adult sizes. DROP OFF will be Monday, November 13-Friday, November 17, 7:00-8:15 a.m. and 3:00 - 5:45 p.m. at Emerson Rec Station, Door #6. As a token of appreciation, each person donating an article to share will be entered into a raffle for a $20 gift card to Mariano’s towards your Thanksgiving feast! Five winners will be awarded! Happy Friday Eagles!

We had a great week at Emerson!  On Wednesday we met with our Future Focused Learning Buddies and learned about trustworthiness. The students had great discussions with their buddies about how to be trustworthy at home and at school.  We also practiced our Earthquake Drill on Wednesday afternoon so we are prepared.  We are also very excited about our Author Visit on Monday!!

 

Safety alert!  We have had many reports in the office about cars going very quickly causing a safety hazard to students in the Mary Queen Parking Lot during drop off and pick-up.  Please be cautious when driving… slow down and do not pass other cars. Thank you for helping to ensure the safety of all our students!

Fitness Fever

Hello Emerson Students,

I know all of you had very active summers!  As fun way to celebrate our activities-I invite you to bring in a photo or drawing of your favorite activity from the summer.

A few great examples would be: biking, hiking, gardening, playing sports, rollerblading, skateboarding, horseback riding, playing at the beach or in the water, washing the car, or even moving to a new house! Please bring 1 picture with your name and teacher’s name on the back.  I look forward to seeing your photos and drawings!

Playaways in the Emerson Library

Last year, Emerson was awarded a District 205 Thiems Grant to purchase Playaways for the Emerson Library. Playaways are devices that are pre-loaded with audio books. The library now has 18 Playaways, including many award-winning and high-interest titles! 

 

We wanted to make you aware that these devices are more valuable than a typical checkout. Costs range from $39.99-$79.99; so, we appreciate your help in assuring that any devices brought home are used with care and returned to the library in great condition. We expect to have them for Emerson students to enjoy for many years to come!

 

Battle of the Books

Students in 4th and 5th grade are invited to participate in the Battle of the Books competition! This year, we will be reading amazing books from the 2018 Illinois Children's Choice Bluestem Book Award nominees. Students who choose to participate will be placed in teams, choose books to read, and "battle" other teams by answering questions about the books. 

 

Meetings will be held during lunch recess on Tuesdays, beginning on November 7 and ending on March 20. Students who participate must commit to reading and attending all meetings.

 

If your child would like to join, please complete this form, enclose it and payment ($10 checks made out to Emerson Elementary School), in an envelope, and return it to Mrs. Kissel or Mrs. Blanford by Thursday, November 2. Note that only the first 30 student registrations received will be accepted. All others will be returned to you.

Hi Eagles!

 

We had an awesome week at Emerson!  On Wednesday, we had a PBIS assembly.  At the assembly we surprised the students (and staff) with the newest member of our Emerson family… an Eagle Mascot!! Thank you so much to PTA for purchasing this great addition to Emerson!  Now we are holding a naming contest for the Eagle.  All students had the opportunity to submit ideas for the name by the end of today.  We will narrow it down to ten names that all of the students in the school will have the chance to vote on during library classes next week.  I can’t wait to find out what our new friend’s name is!

 

During the assembly, we also shared the great news with the students that they earned their first celebration of the year.  The students have been earning Soar slip and for every Soar slip they earned, they were able to vote for the celebration they wanted.  Musical Lunch won as that jar was filled first so we celebrated their respectful, responsible and engaged behavior with a Musical Lunch on Thursday! 

 

Also at the assembly we taught the students a strategy to use when they are not being treated with respect.  If someone feels they are not being treated with respect, they should say, “Please stop” to the person.  Then, if the person doesn’t stop, they need to walk away and tell an adult.  We call this SWAT… Stop, Walk Away and Talk.  We also talked about what to do if you are the one not being respectful.  If you are asked to stop you need to stop what you are doing, take a breath, and leave the situation.  We call this Stop, Breath, Leave.  The teachers and lunch supervisors will be reinforcing this strategy in their classrooms and on the playground so the students learn to advocate for themselves, communicate with one another and problem solve, but also to seek help when needed!

District 205’s Social Work Department presents "Well-parented Kids: 10 Anchors for Building Strong Families." This free program for parents will be held on Tuesday, October 24, from 12:30-2:30 PM in the Sandburg Middle School Auditorium. This presentation will identify the key elements of effective parent-child relationships including setting communication norms, modeling values, sponsoring constructive conflict resolution, maintaining respect and trust, facilitating growth, teaching coping skills and navigating change. The purchase of an outdoor or beautiful indoor tree will benefit Elmhurst 205 schools and students long after the holiday is over. This pre-order fundraising sale supports the long-standing Elmhurst tradition of beautifully lit streets that line our neighborhoods during the holiday season. Trees can be purchased as part of a neighborhood group scheduled for delivery on November 25th, or ordered individually and picked up (or delivered for a $20 fee) on December 2nd.

Happy Friday Eagles!

It was a wonderful week at Emerson!  On Wednesday we had our Future Focused Learning Buddies where we learned about honesty.  The students did a great job engaging in discussions with their buddies about how to display honesty throughout the day!  We also did an evacuation drill with the Elmhurst Fire Department on Thursday and the students did an outstanding job getting out of the building quickly and quietly.  The firemen were very impressed!  We ended the week with a day of College Spirit Wear brought to us by student council!  Based on feedback received this week, we have updated our website with a calendar link to help provide more information about upcoming dates.  Be sure to check it out!

Notes and Reminders:

- Join us for a day time PTA meeting at 8:30 on Tuesday, October 17th.  We will meet in the multipurpose room.

Reflections - Within Reach

The PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program that asks children to get creative! Students are invited to create works of art in any of six different categories, reflecting upon a different theme each year. The six arts categories are dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. The theme for the 2017-2018 school year is "Within Reach".  

Students can create as many projects as they like, in as many arts categories as the like. Only original works of art are accepted. It does not matter whether an entry created for the Reflections Program has been created as a classroom assignment or independently at home. Once judged at the local level, the winners advance to the council/district level for judging. Council/district level winners then advance to the regional level. Regional level winners advance to the state level. State level winners advance to the National level.

The second “Coffee With the Superintendent” of the school year will be held on Monday, October 16 at Bryan Middle School, 111 W. Butterfield Road, Elmhurst, beginning at 10:00 AM. Hi Eagles!

We had a great week at Emerson with lots of learning and Book Fair fun! Thank you so much to the PTA who put on a wonderful book fair. It is exciting to see kids so excited about books and to share that love as a family! Thanks to the Learning and Teaching Department I was able to attend a literacy professional development with our literacy specialists, instructional coach and a few teachers last Thursday.  It was wonderful to be able to spend the day reflecting on our literacy instructional practices and game planning for how we can continue to refine our practice!

Also, this week our PBIS team met to discuss school matters to make the school a more positive place! We are happy to announce that student’s filled the B during their last ‘B sticker day.’ B sticker day is when students focus on one of the school wide expectations (be respectful, be responsible, and be engaged) this time we exemplified Being Responsible!  This means that 80% of the students kept their stickers. PBIS also introduced the golden spoon competition in the lunchroom. The students are scored as a class on their voice level, cleanliness, and ability to follow directions from our lunchroom staff. The classroom that earns the most points is the first to enjoy recess! The next couple lessons for future focused learning buddies focus on honesty, trustworthiness, contemplation, and mindfulness.

A reminder that Thursday, October 12th is our Eat and Earn night at Potbelly’s from 5:00-8:00pm at their St. Charles location. They will donate 25% of all their sales to Emerson so eat up!

Erin’s Law, House Bill 6193, became Illinois law in 2013. This legislation requires schools to teach age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention for grades Pre-K through 12. In Elmhurst, we already have personal safety built into many grade levels’ health education curriculum. Beginning two years ago, after reviewing the requirements of the new legislation, we recognized that our students could benefit from additional information and strategies in order to consider past events and prevent future encounters. Our curriculum was enhanced at each grade level to cover the following:

  • Distinguishing different types of touch
  • Saying “NO”
  • It’s not the child’s fault if someone touches him or her
  • Identifying and telling a trusted adult

Again this year, an award-winning non-profit group, Imagination Theater, will deliver age-appropriate experiences for our students in 1st through 8th grade. Information about their program, called “No Secrets,” may be found by visiting www.imaginationtheater.org. A schedule of all elementary and middle school student assemblies can be found below.

Our school social workers will visit all of the Early Childhood and Kindergarten classrooms, as they did last year, to share age-appropriate read-alouds with students as a part of the Personal Safety Unit that is already in place at our schools.

York High School will be bringing in presenters from Elmhurst Hospital, as well as addressing the topic in multiple courses.

Happy Friday Eagles!

What a great week we had at Emerson! Wednesday was our first Family Math Night and it was awesome!  Almost 100 families attended! A huge THANK YOU to second grade teachers Miss Kawa and Mrs. Wenig and PTA members Mrs. Kaufmann and Mrs. Matusek for their hard work planning and organizing Math Night. This afternoon, we had a Hard Lockdown drill with the Elmhurst Police Department. The students did an excellent job practicing for this situation which we would do if there was an intruder in the building. Next week, our 2nd and 5th graders will be taking the Cogat test which assesses problem solving and reasoning skills. Also, Thursday will be our Scholastic Book Fair! We look forward to seeing you there!

Dear Parents,

This year the district began using the BAS system (Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System) to determine individual student reading levels. This system will be administered three times throughout the year in the fall, winter, and spring. This assessment is administered one-on-one with teachers and assists them in determining student fluency and comprehension levels. Teachers are able to learn what students do as readers, what students need to learn as readers, and how we will support them as readers.

 

This information will be critical for teachers as they begin to teach guided reading during the literacy block. This information will also be used to assist teachers in ensuring that students are being stretched appropriately during their acceleration block. Classroom teachers will discuss where your child is reading and comprehending on the literacy continuum during parent teacher conferences, but in the meantime I wanted you to be aware of this new assessment the district has begun implementing this year. Also know that if your child is reading below grade level expectations you will be informed by the classroom teacher shortly after the assessment window. Most student needs will be met during the acceleration block to avoid missing core instruction in the classroom. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to your classroom teacher, principal, or myself if it is regarding the actual assessment.

Happy Friday Eagles!

It was a wonderful week at Emerson!  Monday night started the week of on a great foot with a State of the School presentation at York.  It is so exciting to hear about the great things happening in D205 and the exciting things to come!! We also had our first PTA meeting this Tuesday night and it was super to see so many parents there.  Your partnership is outstanding, I feel so lucky to have such an awesome PTA to work with!

 Our literacy acceleration block started this week and a common theme I heard from the students was that they were so excited to go to acceleration but upset that it was always over so quickly!  Time flies when you are having fun learning! We also had our second round of Future Focused Learning Buddies on Wednesday.  The students learned about Responsibility this week!  It was awesome to see the older students leading discussions about how to be responsible in all settings.  Next Wednesday from 6:30-7:30 is our first Family Math Night, it looks like we have a lot of rsvps so far!  We are excited about our first math night and hope to see you there!

Happy Friday Eagles!

We had another wonderful and busy week! It was great to see the students giving their super smiles and all dressed up for Picture Day on Monday. On Tuesday, all of the classes had the opportunity to learn about school bus safety and to practice a bus evacuation drill. On Thursday, Running Club started at recess, thank you PTA! Boy am I impressed with all the great runners we have here at Emerson!  We also welcomed our new lead secretary, Mrs. Sheila Billenstein mid-week!  We appreciate all Mrs. Suopys did in the first month of school and are excited to have Mrs. Billenstein on board! 

We have an exciting new instructional block starting on Monday! We will be starting our Literacy Acceleration instructional block. This is a second dose of literacy instruction for ALL students.  It is thirty minutes per day in addition to the Reading Workshop block. During Literacy Acceleration, support staff “flood” the grade level so we are able to regroup students across the grade according to their reading levels. Students who are not performing at grade level are in small groups and working to get to grade level. Students who are performing at grade level are in larger groups and will be enriched and challenged. The groups are made based on MAP scores, Fountas and Pinnell Reading Running Record Levels, and teacher input. The groups are flexible and students will be moved so they are constantly working at an appropriate level. Our goal with the Literacy Acceleration block is to ensure all students are making growth! The teachers have been working very hard to plan and prepare for the start of acceleration and I cannot wait to see it in action!

State of the Schools Address: Dr. Moyer will be giving a State of the Schools Address on Monday, September 18th at 7:00 in the York Commons.  I hope to see you there!

Emerson Singers: Emerson Singers begins on Tuesday, September 19th at 7:30 am.

Late Start: Wednesday, September 20th is a Late Start.  School begins at 9:45!

Dogs on School Grounds: A friendly reminder that dogs are not permitted on school property. Some of our students are afraid and/or allergic to dogs so we want to ensure that all students feel comfortable and safe on school property.

Family Math Night: Wednesday, September 27th is FAMILY MATH NIGHT from 6:30-7:30!  We apologize that the website on the original flyer may not have worked.  Please see the attached flyer for an updated website.  We hope to see you there at Math Night!

The first “Coffee With the Superintendent” will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Hawthorne School, 145 Arthur Street, Elmhurst, beginning at 1:30 PM. Hi Eagle Community! We have had a great week at Emerson! On Tuesday we practiced a fire evacuation drill and the students were amazing! They exited the building quickly and quietly, I was so proud of them. On Wednesday we had our first round of Future Focused Learning Buddies and the kids loved it! Hopefully they came home and told you all about their buddies and what they learned about Respect! It was so neat to see the older students really taking a leadership role and leading great conversations with their younger buddies about what respect is and how we can show respect to each other and to adults! I can’t wait for the next time the buddies meet in a few weeks!

 

I apologize, I am still learning about the google platform so the Curriculum Night Survey I sent out last week didn’t work for you. I made the proper adjustments so now we should be good to go!   • Remember that if your child is not in class by 8:15 they will be marked tardy. If your student is more than 20 minutes late in the morning or picked up more than 20 minutes early, that is considered a half-day absence.

To order a Celebration Book, fill out the form found here and return it to school to the attention of Mrs. Blanford, the Emerson Librarian, along with a check for $15. We will select a book matching your student's reading interests and include it in our next book order. When the book arrives, we'll take a picture of your student with it. The picture will be hung in the library and posted in the book. Your student will be the first to check out the book and then it will be added to our collection for all Emerson students to enjoy.

District 205’s three middle school student councils are fundraising to support the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Nearly 50 Houston Independent School District (HISD) schools have been flooded to some degree, other schools are being used as shelters, and a growing number of students and families have left their homes behind.

 

There are three ways you can help students in Houston:

1. HISD has an immediate need for children’s clothes of all sizes (clean and in reasonably good repair) and school supplies. Please bring donations to Bryan, Churchville or Sandburg and we will send them to Houston for you. If you prefer to send items directly, they can be forwarded to: HISD Harvey Recovery, ℅ Delman Stadium, 2020 Mangum, Houston, TX 77092

 

2. Drop off a monetary donation of any amount and we will forward funds to the Houston Independent School District Foundation.

PBIS Update: Our PBIS Universal team met yesterday and we planned for our first round of Future Focused Learning Buddies! What is this??? All classrooms are partnered up with another class (primary with intermediate) for Learning Buddy time twice a month. During this time the students will be engaged in activities to help them learn about future ready personal skills. These are skills such as perseverance, cooperation, and compassion. For September we will be working on respect and responsibility. Our first buddy time is Wednesday afternoon so be sure to ask your child about their buddy!

 

Online Conferences: Just a reminder that conference sign-up will be online this year. More information will come later this month!

The Harlem Wizards are back in Elmhurst on Saturday, September 30th to entertain the crowd with high-energy exhibition play and audience participation. Cheer on our team of Elmhurst school district principals and teachers as they challenge the Wizards in a basketball game that is sure to include wild antics and lots of laughs. The Elmhurst Commission on Youth, along with Linden Oaks Behavioral Health, part of Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare, will sponsor a presentation outlining when student anxiety becomes a problem. Hear about the effects of anxiety on learning, sources of anxiety in schools, and school refusal. Treatment requires a collaborative approach that includes the student, school staff, parents and mental health professionals. Dr. Laura Koehler, PsyD. Licensed Clinical Psychologist at Linden Oaks, leads the discussion on August 29, beginning at 7:30 PM (note change of time) at Bryan Middle School.

Happy Friday Emerson Community!

 

We have had a great start to the year! After unpacking and organizing mountains of schools supplies, the teachers and students have been working to build strong classroom communities this week!  On Wednesday, we had a welcome back assembly where the students learned about our PBIS behavior expectations for respectful, responsible and engaged behavior and we shared our theme of the year!  Then on Thursday the students went to art, music, and PE for the first time… you should have seen the excitement in their eyes! If these first few days are an indicator of how this year will be, we are in for a great one!  Read below for some announcements and reminders…

 

Solar eclipse: Elementary students will not be going outside to watch the eclipse on Monday, August 21st.  Teachers will be planning grade level appropriate lessons in their classroom about the event.  You are welcome to come and sign your student out if you wish for them to view the eclipse with you.

 

Food at class parties: We have new District 205 guidelines regarding food at school this year. There will be no food at in-school class parties. We will still plan amazing parties for the students with great crafts and games!

 

Entrance doors: Please remember Kindergarten and 3rd grade line up and enter the school in the front of the building at doors 1 and 10. 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades line-up on the side of the school past the parking lot near doors 6 and 7.

 

Lunch supervisors needed: We are in need of daily lunchroom supervisors.  The hours are 10:40-12:40 each day.  If you are interested, please see our district website under employment opportunities! 

 

Theme for 2017-2018: Be sure to ask your students about our theme for this year… Show the world you’ve got that fire! This means we will always try our best, think creatively, and persevere!

 

Finally, a big thank you to PTA for a great welcome back coffee on Wednesday morning, what a great turn out!  Thank you to everyone who will be volunteering this year, it’s our partnership that allows us to do so many awesome events for our students! Also, thank you to PTA for the beautiful décor at the entrance doors, it makes me smile every time I walk in.  Thank you to all for a great first week!

The first day of school is August 16, 2017. It is a full day of school, students in grades 1-5 will need a lunch.  We can’t wait to see everyone on Wednesday!

 

AM Kindergarten – 8:15-11:05 a.m.

PM Kindergarten – 12:05-3:00 p.m.

Grades 1-5 – 8:15-3:00 p.m.

 

BEFORE SCHOOL STUDENT LINEUP & DISMISSAL

Grades 1, 2, 4 & 5 will line up in the playground area. Please look for your child’s line indicated by their room number painted on the ground. 1st and 2nd grades dismiss out door 7 at the end of the day.  4th and 5th grades dismiss out of door 4 at the end of the day.

 

Grades 3 & Kinder line up in front of the building by the circle drive. 3rd grade and Mrs. Garcia’s class line up by Door #1 and Ms. Niggins’ kinder classes by Door #10. Kindergarten parents are expected to stay with their child until the teacher comes for their class. Kinder and 3rd dismiss out the same doors they enter at the end of the day.

 

Please plan to have your student arrive no earlier than 8:00 am. because there is no student supervision prior to 8:00 am.  The first bell is at 8:10 am. and students will enter the school. Students are expected to be sitting in their desks and ready to begin classat 8:15 am. Children are considered tardy after 8:15 am.

 

AM Kindergarten and 1st Grade Meet & Greet 8:15-9:15 am

Parents please line up with your children in their class line and come in with your children. You can meet your child’s teacher and help your children put away their supplies. Please bring the supplies with you on this date. PTA supply boxes are already in classrooms if you preordered in May. At 9:15 your children will remain in the classroom and you can visit the PTA Opening Day Coffee in the LRC or enjoy your day!

 

PM Kindergarten Meet & Greet 12:05-1:05 pm

Parents please line up with your children in their class line and come in with your children. You can meet your child’s teacher and help your children put away their supplies. The Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) are reminding parents and guardians to check their children’s vaccination records to make sure they meet immunization requirements prior to the first day of school.

The federally funded Vaccines for Children program provides vaccines at no cost to children in low-income households. Families can call (312) 746-6050 in Chicago or (217) 785-1455 in all other parts of Illinois to learn about free vaccines.

“Immunizations are central to keeping students healthy and ready to learn,” said State Superintendent of Education Tony Smith, Ph.D. “Keeping children’s vaccinations up to date according to the recommended schedule is one of the most important things parents and guardians can do to protect the health of the youngest and oldest among us. Whether for a baby starting at a new child care facility, a toddler heading to preschool, or a student going back to elementary, middle or high school, I encourage parents and guardians to check their children’s vaccination records and, if necessary, schedule a visit with a physician or clinic. Doing so now will avoid a potential last-minute rush.”

Immunizations have eradicated several serious diseases, such as smallpox, polio, and diphtheria in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Instances of other serious diseases, such as measles and rubella, have dropped by more than 99 percent since the pre-vaccination era. Keeping students’ vaccinations up to date is especially important, as diseases can spread quickly among groups of unvaccinated children.

“Child care facilities, preschool programs, and schools are prone to outbreaks of infectious diseases,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. “Children in these settings can easily spread illnesses to one another due to poor hand washing, not covering their coughs, and other factors, such as interacting in crowded environments. When children are not vaccinated, they are at increased risk for disease and can spread disease to others in their child care centers, classrooms, and communities – including babies who are too young to be fully vaccinated and people with weakened immune systems due to cancer and other health conditions.”

I hope you are having a wonderful summer!  I am very excited to be joining the Emerson community as your principal.  I can’t wait to get to know all of your students and you this year as we partner together to provide an excellent education for your children!

 

A little bit about me… I am coming to Elmhurst from twelve years in Schaumburg District 54 where I was an elementary classroom teacher, a literacy instructional coach and an assistant principal.  I have a Master’s Degree in Language and Literacy, an Administrative certificate, and in June I completed my Doctorate in Reading and Language.  I am very passionate about instruction, creating future ready students who will be great leaders in our community and providing high-quality education for all students! My husband, Matt, and I are blessed with two daughters, Molly who is three and Quinn who will be turning one in September. They are both a blast and bring so much joy and laughter to our lives every day.  I can’t wait for you to meet them!

 

Some important information as we head into the start of the year:

-Teacher/classroom assignments will be sent out via email on Friday, August 11th to all families who have completed registration information on file.  Please be sure to update your registration prior to that date or your student will not have a classroom placement.

-Curriculum Night will be August 29th.  We will begin the night in the gym.  More specific information will be sent out prior to the event.

-Please check the website for upcoming dates including kindergarten play dates and the PTA Ice Cream Social!

-On Monday, August 14 at 7:00 in the York High School Commons, Dr. Bill Daggett will be speaking to the Elmhurst community.  He is an outstanding speaker and a leader for 21st century education.  He will change the way you think about education today!

The DuPage Regional Office of Education, in partnership with volunteers from the DuPage Credit Union and Catholic Charities (Diocese of Joliet), will sponsor the annual Back to School Fair for low-income families on Wednesday, August 2, from 11 AM to 6 PM at St. Francis High School in Wheaton.

This is an opportunity for families to meet with and learn about services provided by numerous agencies from DuPage County and the State of Illinois. Each K-12 student in attendance will receive free vision/dental screenings, plus free school supplies - even a free haircut, if desired. Meant to be a fun day for kids, the Fair will offer balloon art, games and face painting. Books and novels will be given away, as well as coupons for free haircuts. The last day of school was approved at the April 25 Board of Education meeting. Due to a mild winter, and no other weather-related incidents, the five emergency days which are built into the school calendar, have not been used. Below are the student dismissal dates and times. The 2016-17 End-of-Year Calendar contains helpful information about final exams and 8th grade promotion times.

May 25 - Last day of attendance for York High School freshmen, sophomores and juniors at the conclusion of exams.

May 31 - Last day of attendance for Early Childhood and AM/PM kindergarten students. Last day of attendance for 8th grade students.

June 1 - Last day of school for grades 1-5; early dismissal at 11:15 AM. Last day of school for grades 6 and 7; early dismissal at 11:35 AM.
